Preparations for surgery depend on the type of surgery that you are having. Your physician will discuss with you how to prepare for your surgery. However, if you will undergo general anesthesia, you may be asked to do the following:
PRE-OP GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS 1 - DO NOT eat or drink after midnight the day before your surgery. 2- You may have sips of ONLY water up to 3 hrs before surgery/endoscopy. 3- Take a shower in the morning of your surgery. 4- DO NOT shave the operating area. We shorten the hair with disposable clippers where it is necessary. 5- You need to buy (and bring it on the day of surgery) an ABDOMINAL BINDER for ventral hernia repair. These have been discussed when Dr. Bahasadri was going over the details of your procedure with you. 6- You may need INGUINAL HERNIA TRUSS if it is recommended by Dr. Bahasadri.
7- You need bowel preparation before any colon or rectal surgery. Buy one pack of PicoSalax and follow the instructions. 8- You need Fleet Enema in the morning of your surgery for any operations for hemorrhoid/fistula/anal fissure. Buy it over the counter and follow the instructions. 9- DO NOT SMOKE at least a month before your surgery and at least a month after. Smoking is significantly interfering with your wound healing and will increase your chances of wound infection up to seven times. Infection can be disastrous with hernia repair and intestine operations.
